Typhoon Relief Tournament Ended Early

Published by Kayla under Announcements

Hi everyone,

Due to the tournament ending early yesterday, we aren’t continuing into Sunday, November 21st. A special thanks to all the participants yesterday and also to all the people that helped out with the event.

We will still continue raising money for typhoon relief even after the tournament. We’ve raised over $300 so far, and we would like to continue the effort. If you would like to donate, we have now set-up an online donation located at the left side bar. Feel free to contact mitfsa(at)mit.edu if you have any questions concerning donations to the Philippine National Red Cross.

To MITFSA members: be sure to reply to the email sent out concerning a get-together before Finals week.

To those that wish to join MITFSA: we are currently planning our final get-together of the semester. If you would like to join in our gathering and meet MITFSA, please send an email to fsa-president@mit.edu.

Thanks,

kayla

November Event Reminders

Published by Kayla under Announcements

Here are the details on events we will be having or participating in this November.

Kamayan 2009 (TODAY!)

About: This is an annual District One event where Filipino student organizations of D1 do a variety of cultural performances to raise money for a beneficiary (this year is for the Philippine National Red Cross and Gawad Kalinga). A few of us (Kayla, Francis, and Princess) will be volunteering for the event, so do drop by! And hopefully next year, if we keep on expanding, we will be able to participate in Kamayan 2010!
When&Where: November 7, 7pm @Northeastern University (exact details on poster from previous post)
Admission: $5

———————
Tony Meloto @ Brandeis University (Nov9)

About: Tony Meloto, Gawad Kalinga (GK) Founder Winner of Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership, will be giving a lecture on the work GK has being doing in the Philippines. If you’re planning of attending, let Kayla (atekai at mit.edu) know because she will be going to the event. For more information: Vilma Horca, MA SID (vhorca at brandeis.edu)
When&Where: November 9, 12pm – 1:45 PM, Room 163

———————
Night Market (Nov14)

About: Authentic Food, Amazing Performances, Awesome Cultural Booths from the various Asian cultural groups all over campus. MITFSA will be having a booth where we will be selling Barbeque and Lumpia. If you want to help cook or volunteer, please contact Sam (samuel at mit.edu).
When&Where: November 14, 7-10 PM @ Lobdell
Admission: $5 at pre-sale/$7 at the door (includes admission and 5 booth tickets)

———————
Filipino Catholic Mass (Nov15)

About: Once a semester, MITFSA hosts one of the Catholic Masses with Boston College’s Filipino community at MIT Chapel. And afterwards we have lunch next door (W11) where we will be serving Filipino food! (Home-cooking by Kayla’s dad, so you know it’s gonna be intense.) BC’s Filipino choir is also looking for singers from MITFSA to join in with them! (More details to come.) If you would like to have a part in Mass, volunteer to help with cooking/cleaning/serving, please contact Kayla & Maita (atekai at mit.edu, mesteban at mit.edu).
When&Where: November 15th 1pm @ MIT Chapel
Admission: Nothing! It’s Mass! All are welcome.
** Really interesting sidenote, this is the day of Manny Pacquiao’s fight (on HBO?) which I heard is being bought at Simmons. Ask Simmons Residents (MITFSA: Vero/Maita/Nate/BJ) about getting you in or something.

———————
MITFSA Typhoon Relief Basketball Tournament (Nov21-22)

Fundraiser Updates:

Teams: We need more teams to participate! We could also do a general form for students that want to participate but can’t form a team. They would just need to pay a $15 dollar reg fee and should be all set to participate.

Sponsors: Anyone think they can find sponsors to help us with prizes and gift certificates? Or maybe your family owns a random chain of stores, etc. We just need sponsors. Sponsor letter in Kayla’s dropbox. Email her if you need access, atekai at mit.edu)

Solicitation Letters: Send them out to family, friends, anyone you basically know! Solitication letter is also in Kayla’s dropbox.

Volunteers: Either sign up, or show up and we’ll find a place for you! But it could be in your advantage to sign-up because a limited number of shirts are involved and so there’s a good chance that if you volunteer for more than 1 shift, you’ll be eligible to get the official MITFSA Typhoon Relief Basketball Tournament t-shirt.

And as usual, for all general comments/concerns/questions/suggestions/feedback, please contact MITFSA exec at mitfsa at mit.edu.

Updates for Week 11/2-11/6

Published by Kayla under Announcements

Hello all,

First of all, welcome to the new MITFSA website. We will be using this from now on to keep everyone updated on all our events. But please do check your emails that start with the subject “[MITFSA]…” Lots of those have important information and sometimes important documents that you might need to access. I’ve also opened up my dropbox so that you can find and download the files from there. Please email me if you cannot access it.

Updates: MITFSA-sponsored Typhoon Relief Basketball Tournament

Team Registration: We are now inviting MIT student groups and Boston/Cambridge-area college students to form teams to play in our basketball tournament. Please direct those interested to this form:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dHA0YnNXNU9kbms2WnU4WUtvc3VWTWc6MA

Volunteers: If you haven’t signed up, here is the link to the spreadsheet of the schedule. You don’t have to be an MITFSA member to volunteer your time. As long as you leave your name and contact information and you show up the day and time of your shift, we welcome you as a volunteer.

Advertising: We’ve got the flyer all done. I’ve emailed you all the pdf file. Here’s a jpg in case the pdf isn’t a great forwarding attachment since it’s so huge.

MIT-FSA Flyer [JPEG]

Typhoon Info Board: During both days of the tournament, we would like to inform those who come to show their support of the student teams of the recent events in the Philippines, specifically the damage done by the typhoons this past month. There was an idea of creating a poster board where we would pin up articles and pictures of what’s been going on in the Philippines. If you’re interested in this, please contact exec.

Solicitation letters: I also emailed you guys a solicitation letter which you can forward to all your friends and family back in your hometowns or whoever may be interested in donating to our cause. If you haven’t been able to help plan the fundraiser, but would still like to help in some way, this is something really simple that you can do. Asking for money or items that can be prizes would be ideal.

Sponsors: We’re in search of sponsors to donate gift certificates to be prizes in our tournament. We will have prizes for teams that raise the most money, the teams that place in the tournament’s top 3, and for contests if we choose to have them (3pt contest, etc.) There’s a file in my dropbox you can edit if you know some people that can sponsor something for our fundraiser.

Lastly,

Tournament Details: If you would like to help with the organization of the actual tournament (determining the tournament bracket, deciding on the contests that will be done in between games,  choosing what happens between half-time, etc.) please email exec ASAP. This way we can get more tournament details finalized as the days get closer to the tournament.

I thank you all for your patience and hope you guys are ready for an amazing tournament.

For questions/comments/concerns, please email exec at mitfsa [at] mit [dot] edu
